Mike Weir shot a blistering 9-under 63 in his second 18 holes of the day to take a three-shot lead over Phil Mickelson into the final round of the Dominion Energy Charity Classic on Saturday in Richmond, Va.
Weir, who hails from Canada, sits at 13 under after a 36-hole day. His three-stroke lead ties for the largest 36-hole lead in tournament history (Bernhard Langer, 2017).
The first round was moved to Saturday after more than an inch of rain fell on the Country Club of Virginia golf course Thursday and Friday. Play began at 7:30 a.m. ET and concluded at 6:40 p.m., leaving two holes left to be played in the second round. The second round will resume Sunday at 8:45 a.m. and the final round will begin at 10:10 a.m.
Weir's 63 was the low round of the second round after shooting an opening 68. It was his career-best on the Champions Tour.
"I'm super happy with the way I played today," Weir said. "My mindset going into today knowing we had 36, I wanted to get in a nice rhythm for the day because there's so many holes. If you get in a nice rhythm, you can kind of ride it and I did that, I got in a nice rhythm."
Mickelson (10 under) shot 68 and 66, with his second 18 holes tied for the second-lowest of the day's second round.
South African Retief Goosen and Brandt Jobe each shot at 68 and 68 to sit tied for third at 8 under, five strokes behind Weir. Germany's Langer (67, 70) and Wes Short Jr. (69, 68) are tied for fifth at 7 under.
Weir, making his eighth start on the Champions tour, followed up his 68 by carding a bogey-free second round against nine birdies.
What was working for Weir?
"Everything," he said. "You know, everything. I'm playing really well. I'm driving it well, irons are good, pin high a lot, my putter's nice, so my whole game feels good."
Mickelson had a chaotic first round, carding six birdies, an eagle but four bogeys. He settled down in the second, recording seven birdies against just one bogey.
"I haven't played -- I haven't competed in the last three weeks, so it was a good first day," Mickelson said. "It was a little rusty, I was 2 over through five, I was a little rusty starting out. Some things to work on, but it's a good day for me to be able to identify what I need to work on."
